After graduating with the Bachelor of Music (Boston University 1963) as well as observing liberal arts education as an academic (Brown University, 1971-1975) and am a strong believer of an approach to education that is integrated which includes studying arts alongside other disciplines. It is no surprise coming from an ethnomusicologist, who earned obtained an MA in 1967 as well as earned a Ph.D. at UCLA. The program in ethnomusicology that I joined at UC Berkeley (from 1975-1976) fits well in a department of music that is part of the College of Letters and Science. Being able to explore multiple areas of interest is something that I truly love. It's an absolute pleasure teaching graduate as well as undergraduate students. I am a published with three of my books published: Music in India: the Classical Traditions; Thinking Musically as well as Music in Japan, Experiencing the Music of Expressing Culture. There are times when I am mainly a Professor, as well as other time periods in which I perform administrative duties (such as Chair of Department of Music, 1983-1988, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-1998 and the Chair of Deans for the College of Letters and Science between 1994 and 1998).
